A System That Slips

These sequences of sound are a sonic meditation of sorts....

The core sounds of these pieces were generated with a digital synthesis formula of my creation. I envisioned/heard a system that would handle the subtleties of extreme digital timbres and enact the artifice of perceptual organization. My friend Chris Madock refined a version of the digital synthesizer I created. With his finessing, I could implement an array of these digital synthesizers all connected to a central timing system. With a cluster of digital synths, modulation points within the synthesis, and triggers connected to a timing structure, I had a complex system of sound generation. I constructed the system to avoid random jumps in tempo and modulation. Instead, I wanted the digital synthesis, the rate of events, and the way parameters morphed, to unravel at a slow pace. To do so, the timing architecture that triggers the synthesis is constructed in a manner in which the overarching system is in a state of constant subtle change. In short, the structure that produces the triggering of events for the system is always heading towards a state of being “off,” or slipping. To add another layer to the fluctuating patterned audio, on certain tracks a kick drum is triggered whenever the synthesis reaches a certain spectral energy. The combination of event generation and synthesis controlled by the slipping system generates a monolith of steadily undulating audio and auto-destructive phrases in constant glissade. The interweaving, phasing, and fleeting alignment that one might hear in these pieces is constantly evolving.

The thought of "Valley Flutes" and the fluffy cover had me fearing yet another New Age schlock tape to toss on the pile. Was quite happy to be wrong after giving both long-form compositions a listen. Feels more like old-school ambience with slight nods to the avant garde and psychedelia of the era. Easily my 2nd favorite come down tape from CTatsu after Prayer's "Second Species". jasonk
